MintGuard review: does it keep mice and rats away?

By the MintGuard team · Updated 26 October 2026 · Who we are

What you get

MintGuard pack contents: box, 12 balls, pouch and placement card

Each pack has 12 solid peppermint balls, a resealable pouch, and a card showing where to put them around the house. There's nothing to plug in or set up.

How it works

MintGuard's three oils: castor, peppermint and clove

Each ball combines three oils. Peppermint gives the strong smell, clove adds a sharp scent rodents tend to avoid, and castor oil slows evaporation so the scent lasts weeks, not days. Mice and rats rely heavily on smell, so a strong scent along their routes makes those areas less attractive. For an honest look at the evidence, read does peppermint repel mice?

What works

  • No poison, no traps, nothing to empty
  • No socket needed, so it works in cars, sheds and lofts
  • Each ball lasts 30 to 60 days
  • 90-day money-back guarantee
  • Tracked UK delivery

Watch out for

  • Not a fix for a heavy infestation; call a pro
  • Needs replacing every 1 to 2 months
  • Strong mint smell, which some people won't like
  • Works best alongside sealing gaps and storing food

Who it's right for

  • Homes with pets or young children who want to avoid poison
  • Car owners who've had wires chewed
  • Anyone seeing the first signs: droppings, scratching, gnawed packets
  • People preparing for winter, when rodents move indoors

What to expect, week by week

  • Day 1: place the balls along routes and at entry points, and seal any obvious gaps. The scent is strongest now.
  • Week 1 to 2: check for fresh droppings or new gnaw marks. Clear old droppings (wear gloves) so you can spot anything new.
  • Week 3 to 4: if there's still fresh activity in one spot, add another ball there and look again for a gap you've missed.
  • Day 30 to 60: replace each ball when you can no longer smell it close up. Warm, airy rooms use it up faster than lofts.

If activity is heavy or keeps going after proofing, that's a sign you need a pest controller. Use MintGuard afterwards to help keep them from coming back.

Honest limitations

  • Evidence on how well scents repel rodents is mixed. It works best as part of a plan, not on its own.
  • It won't clear an established rat infestation.
  • The smell is strong close up. Most people like it, but some don't.
  • It needs replacing, so budget for a pack every month or two during the colder season.

Who shouldn't buy it

  • Anyone seeing rats in daylight or lots of activity: call a professional first.
  • Homes where a cat spends time in every room, since cats are sensitive to essential oils. Use it only in spaces the cat can't reach.
  • Anyone who wants a single one-off purchase that never needs replacing.
