Rat repellent and rat deterrents

By the MintGuard team · Updated 26 October 2026 · Who we are

Quick answer

Rat repellent is an optional extra, not a substitute for dealing with food, shelter and entry routes. Evidence for peppermint and other scent deterrents is mixed. For rats inside a house, repeated sightings or suspected drainage access, arrange professional advice promptly. We make MintGuard and explain its limits here: our scent balls contain no poison, but they do not remove nests or repair a broken drain.

Signs to look for

  • Repeated fresh droppings, gnawing or greasy travel marks suggest an active route, but ask for identification if the species is uncertain.
  • Burrows beside foundations, damage near drains or repeated entry through the same opening deserve a building-level investigation, not another scent at the entrance.
  • A daytime sighting is worth reporting, but it is not a reliable count of the local rat population. Combine it with other evidence rather than assuming a particular infestation size.

Rat deterrent for lofts and garages: investigate access first

A scratching noise above the bedroom is unsettling, but sound alone cannot identify a rat. Other animals can enter roof spaces, and the wrong assumption can lead to the wrong treatment. Record when you hear it and inspect only from safe, boarded access. Do not climb across insulation or disturb a possible protected animal.

If there are signs of rats, look beyond the loft. The route may begin at ground level, pass through a garage or involve a building defect. A scent placed beside the hatch does not close that route. Ask a pest controller to consider the whole property, including attached outbuildings and any need for specialist drainage investigation.

Rat repellent outdoors: bins, bird seed and compost

A tidy kitchen will not solve a reliable food source outside. Check whether bin lids close properly, whether bags are left beside the bin and whether fallen bird seed remains overnight. Put stored animal feed in robust containers with secure lids. Keep an eye on neighbouring shared areas without trespassing or making accusations.

Open-air scent disperses and weather changes exposure. Do not expect peppermint around a garden boundary to create an invisible fence. Make sheds and stores less welcoming through repairs and sensible storage. If a burrow is active, do not pour household chemicals into it or block it as an improvised treatment; get advice on appropriate control.

Natural scent, ultrasonic rat repellers and professional control

MintGuard uses peppermint, clove and castor oils in slow-release solid balls. A pack contains 12 balls, each with a stated life of 30 to 60 days. The format needs no electricity and contains no poison or traps. It may suit a supplementary scent position in a garage if the label permits and the area is inaccessible to children and pets.

Ultrasonic hardware is another buying option, but a socket does not mean useful coverage inside walls, stored boxes or enclosed spaces. Do not use either type as evidence that a rat problem has been treated. Professional control is a separate service, with inspection, a plan for active animals and advice about preventing access.

Using scent without delaying rat control

  1. 1Arrange inspection for indoor rat signs and agree which routes can safely be proofed. Do not conceal evidence or close suspected active access before discussing the plan.
  2. 2Choose accessible-to-you but inaccessible-to-pets locations allowed by the label. Avoid wiring, heat, food storage and unboarded parts of a loft.
  3. 3Log the date and inspect for fresh signs. Replace within the stated product life where still needed, but contact the controller if activity continues or moves elsewhere.

Rat problems and health: practical precautions without panic

The NHS says leptospirosis is rare in the UK and can spread through infected animal urine, including that of rats and mice. This does not mean every dropping represents an infection. It does mean contaminated water, soil and surfaces deserve sensible precautions. Keep children and pets away from suspect areas and avoid handling dead animals with bare hands.

Cover cuts and wash your hands after relevant exposure. If you become unwell after possible contact with infected urine, water or soil, follow NHS advice and tell the clinician about that exposure. A repellent is not a disinfectant. Extensive contamination in a loft or store is a reason to discuss safe clean-up with the professional handling the problem.

What to budget before buying a rat repellent

One MintGuard pack is £39; two are £69, three £89 and four £109. Four packs work out at £27.25 each. These are product prices, not a rat-clearance quote. Allow separately for any inspection, drainage work or structural repair, and ask the provider what follow-up is included.

Proofing checklist

  • Repair damaged doors and gaps around services with suitable durable materials. A loose plug of soft filler is not a finished rat-proof repair.
  • Check drainage concerns with a qualified specialist. Do not install a valve or alter pipework without advice about compatibility, access and maintenance.
  • Preserve ventilation and investigate any possible bat access before roof work. GOV.UK explains that disturbing bats or their roosts is an offence.

Two complete sets cover about 120 days only if each lasts 60 days; four sets are needed at 30 days. Individual balls last 30 to 60 days.
DIY scent suppliesTypically around £5–£15 per bottleRepeat purchases depend on bottle size, placement and refresh frequency. This is not a four-month performance guarantee.
Ultrasonic unitTypically around £10–£30 per unit, plus electricityMore than one room may need separate units. Buying hardware does not establish that it will control activity.
Basic proofing materialsTypically around £10–£40 for small DIY jobsA one-off materials allowance, not labour, drainage repairs or a whole-house quotation.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming extra balls compensate for an open drain or plentiful food. Increasing scent is not a diagnosis or a repair.
  • Using loose poison as an easy alternative. Any control method must follow its instructions and protect other animals; get professional advice when unsure.

Right for you if…

  • People considering an additional scent measure after an entry-route assessment and practical food-control work.

Not right if…

  • Established indoor rat activity requiring treatment, an active drainage defect, or a garden where scent is expected to form a permanent boundary.

When to call a professional

  • There are rats indoors, repeated burrows, inaccessible routes or ongoing damage. Ask for inspection and a written explanation of control and proofing priorities.
  • The issue may involve shared drains or neighbouring buildings. A coordinated plan is more useful than each household putting a different product outside its door.

Common questions

What is the best rat deterrent?

Start with denying access to food and shelter and repairing entry routes. Scent may be an optional addition, but there is no honest guarantee that a particular smell will stop rats.

Do rats hate peppermint?

Peppermint is used in deterrent products, but evidence for dependable household control is mixed. Do not interpret a strong smell as proof that rats have left.

Can I use rat repellent in the garden?

Check the product label for permitted use. Open-air conditions make scent less predictable, so prioritise bins, feed storage, damaged structures and professional assessment of active burrows.

Will rat repellent work in a loft?

It will not solve the route into the building or remove a nest. Confirm the animal first, then agree control and repairs before considering an additional scent product.

Should I block a rat hole straight away?

Not blindly. Where rats may be inside, ask about the sequence of control and proofing so you do not simply trap animals in a void or redirect them.

Does my council deal with rats?

Some councils offer pest services and may charge. GOV.UK advises contacting your council to check or using a pest controller found through an established trade body.
